01 – What are the 3 best things about your efforts for this year’s exhibition?

TIME: I have managed my time well and hopefully won’t be rushed at the end.

THE AMOUNT: I have put a huge amount of effort in this year to get things completed.

QUALITY: Because of the good time management and the effort that I have put in the quality of work is of a high standard and I am proud of the results.

02 – Did you manage time well?

I Have done a time line up leading to the exhibition and have pretty much kept on line with it hopping to have every thing completed a week before the due date in case I run into any problems.

03 – Did you manage materials well i.e. test prototypes?

Yes I Have completed all prototypes and constructed final product with time left over to refine.

04 – Have you researched installation methods?

Sort of have thought about the equipment that I need. But have not organized it to be available for me.

05 – Have you made a shortlist of the essentials for the last WEEK?

Made a time line that every thing must be completed by. Have time left over if I have any problems.

06 – Have you made a shortlist of the essentials for the last DAY?

I have asked for the day off work. So I can spend the day putting up my work and also setting up the exhibition, putting up the balloons and other posters.

In regard to creative collaboration & the exhibition:

Discuss these questions - write a paragraph on each and use examples

1 . List and describe 2 areas of failure in your preparation for uphere

  • Needed to have a meeting with the Lectures to find out what the requirements would be to create the theme and branding of the exhibition. Needed to find out the colour theme that needed to be used. What branding of the CDU logo was appropriate.

  • Was looking at the theme and branding as a poster design instead of looking at the over all theme that the exhibition would be. I was a bit confused with what I had to design and any designs that I did do were not accepted.

2. Describe how you could realistically improve on this next time you exhibit

Set strict deadline that must be adhered to. Without this deadlines things did not get done in time. More communication from the other lectures in class time to what they wanted to see in the exhibition instead of having the meeting on at a different time where we could not make it most of the time. A class specified for the construction of project to do with running the exhibition. (needed a actual class and not just a study class to complete things for the exhibition because some people did not use that time productively.)

Communication methods

In todays class we had to research 3 topics using you tube as a search engine to find information on the elected topics. These were.
  1. Communication Methods
  2. Emerging Technologies
  3. Idea adaption
The group that I was in got given Communication methods. First we split up and look individually for a video that would best represent the topic. After we had all found one that we like we all watched it and then discussed if it would be appropriate or not. It came down to 2 videos that we thought look interesting one was a historical look on communication from past to present to future. Even thought it was not factual in some points it was interesting to see what some ones thoughts are on the future of communication. Mostly the effects that the internet has had and what effects it will have on human life.

The other video that we came across was a different way that people communicate. The video is of some deaf performance artists that could still preform to music because they were getting the beat of the music signed to them using sing langue.

http://www.brickartist.com/gallery/reflection.jpg

01 – What is the difference between reflection and criticism?

Reflection happens after some thing has been completed. You look back on what has been done. Criticism is done through out the process comments on the project as it progresses.

02 – Can you reflect while you are designing?

Not really reflection is usually done after it has been completed. You look back on the project and evaluate aspects that worked and did not work. You learn what to do better next time and what also to steer away from.

03 – Do you set aside time for reflection?

Yes after a project is complete i will always look back on it and do an evaluation on it. It helps with the learning process it is how you can become better than before.

04 – Do you make notes on your reflections?

No written notes but more mental ones don't really reflect on it to deep. Just go over it quickly and remember the important bits that stand out.

05 – When is the best time to reflect?

After the work has been completed. When you have a clear mind and no distractions.

06 – Do you compare your work to work by your heroes?

Yes i think that it is good to. It will give you a goal to try and get to. It will help you improve your work. Kind of like a competition you want to be better than you have been.

07 – How do you benefit by comparison?

The quality will be better each time some thing is created because you will each want to better one another.

08 – What can be a disadvantage of comparison?

The bar maybe set to hight and you get depressed that you will never be that good. Your self esteem and confidence will go down and in turn your quality of work will fall.

REFLECTION

1 . Describe how reflection has helped improve your own designs

Because you can become to focused and only follow the one path. By doing this you may miss out on something great that could be in another direction. By reflecting you can have a look at what has been done so far and then look at all the possible direction that it could lead into. This way you will come up with something that you may have thought about if you had of just stayed on the same path as the original idea.

2. Describe how you have reflected on your group’s designs

We reflected on the process of how we created it. The things that we could have done better and the things that were helpful and that we could use in the future. We also reflected on the end design. We look at the design and questioned if it had met all the requirements. Did it represent the look that we were looking for. Then we looked to see if we needed to fix up anything. Finally the overall project was reflected on and how we got to the end product.

3. When is reflection useless?

If you have to many distractions. You can not focus on what you have at hand because it will get mixed up with all the other things that are going on. It is useless if you you do it during the process of creating something. Because you have not finished it yet and there is not really anything worth reflecting on. Also before you have started it is impossible to reflect on something that does not exist yet.

1. What does Maeda call the 3 keys?
KEY 1 : Away (appear more simple)
KEY 2 : Open (openness simplifies complexity)
KEY 3 : Power (use less gain more)

2. Describe how you have used these in your work towards UPHERE? Give at least
one example of each key.
Key 1. Instead of having all my work saved on the computer and slowing it down i save it all on a remote hard drive to optimize power on the computer.
Key 2. An open mind of ideas can lead to simplified designs. You will cover all bases and think of all details to do with the construction of the design.
Key 3. If you think about all aspects of the design then you will be able to use less effort/ power to construct the product.

3. Describe an incident in the production of UPHERE where technology has been an
enabler…. and another where it has been a disabler!
Google docs. Not every one was able to communicate successfully.
Every one has access to a computers and other equipment e.g. cameras and audio to be able to complete their work.

4. At this stage in the exhibition process you are all working on some element or
process for the big event. List 3 things (in your current project) that you could take away to simplify and one thing you could add for meaning.
  1. The need for the other areas of study to decide on the theme of the exhibition.
  2. Take away all the small projects from each class and have one large project that each class will contribute to. E.G. Do all the designs in 2D and 3D class then get them ready to print in pre-press.
  3. Work so that I could concentrate on completing my uni work.
If I had of put even more effort in I could have completed some thing great.

Moving On

Discuss these questions in relation to a group creating a design in collaboration

01 – Have you had to abandon any exhibition design concepts so far?

Yes because of time constraints, I have had to cut back on the amount of work that i was going to exhibit in the show. But I am no going to concentrate on the work I am putting in and making it of very high quality and standard.

02 – If so, was it hard?

It was because i really wanted to have a lot of work to show but it would have been allot of average work rather than a few high quality works.

03 – Do you think it is easy to miss a better idea if it is not the first one?

Some times but many times the better ideas only come from having done the first ideas.

04 – Do you have any techniques for creating unpredictable ideas?

Yes but Im not going to share it because it will not be unpredictable any more.

05 – Is logic the best way to attack a design problem?

Yes but you also have to put feeling and emotion into it. This way people will be able to relate to it.

06 – What other problem solving methods could work?

Step away for a while clear your mind for new ideas to come. Look around for inspiration.

07 – Do you ever doubt your design decisions?

Some times but then i always make them better. But the more I look at something that more areas I will find to fix.

08 – Do you ever consciously put on “another hat” to get inspiration?

Yes i try and view it as if i were some one else. Good to have a look at it from another perspective.

09 – Describe somebody opposite to you in relation to their design approach?

10 – Could you imagine designing like them?

If the need came to it i would have a go I love learning new things. Expand your arsenal of skills.

In regard to creative collaboration:

Discuss these questions - write a paragraph on each and use examples

1 . Describe how you have contributed to design solutions for other group members

Just coming up with little tips that will help them in the construction of their projects.

2. Describe how you have challenged designs by other students in your group

Coming up with new ideas that they may not have thought of yet.

3. Are you flexible when others suggest design improvements / changes?

Yes Im always up for another persons perspective gives me a border view on the design. They will find thing that i may have over looked.

4. Choose a design that group input has changed radically. Post before & after images.

5. Describe the process of shifting the design solution radically.

Answer the following questions as succinctly as possible in your own words 10 mins: Cut & paste into your blog and start answers / 10 mins: Open discussion

1. Using UPHERE as an example, describe an aspect of your work or something you have worked on, where you have found a symbiotic relationship that is both complexity and simplicity

My stencil art work. The process to make the stencil is quite complex. But the end image is very simple.

2. Provide a conceptual example of a situation that has arisen during this project where you have had a return on failure?

Finding a hinge system for my portfolio. My first design did not work as well so with some extra research I have refined my design and come up with a new system.

3. Homework: How are you using the laws in relation to your contribution to The UPHERE exhibition? Provide a short explanation and example for TWO of the laws so far. Use your work towards and your examples.

LEARN Knowledge makes everything simpler. Having been in some exhibitions before I have a bit of knowledge that I can offer people to make the exhibition run smoother.

EMOTION More emotions are better than less. The more emotion that you put into something the more pride and worth you will get out of it. The passion will help create something great.

Respect / Listening
Discuss these questions in relation to a group creating a design in collaboration
http://www.sausd.us/lathrop/lib/lathrop/respect.jpg
http://completewellbeing.com/static/img/articles/2008/09/command-dont-demand-respect-full.jpg
01 – Do you want or need respect?
Yes, To have a good working relationship with some you need to have respect.
02 – Is there anybody in your class who does not give you respect?
No i would hope that we all respect each other. Otherwise our collaborations will not work.
03 – If so, how do you feel about them?
If they do not respect me then i makes it hard to work with them.
04 – Is there anybody in your class who you do not respect?
No i treat every one with respect so that i get respect in turn.
05 – If so, how could you change your feelings to be more naturally respectful?
Treat every one with respect so that I get respect in turn.
06 – When do you find yourself not listening in class?
When ever I'm distracted or am multitasking.
07 – What sort of people bore you?
Negative people, People who have no self drive.
08 – What sort of people are bored by you?
Maybe people with opposite an personality to me.
09 – Do you ever find that other students or teachers are not listening to you?
Sometimes i just want them to listen till I'm finished then make comments.
10 – If so, How could you improve this situation?
It comes back down to the respect that every one should show to each other.
