Answer the following questions as succinctly as possible in your own words
1. Describe the relationship between complexity and simplicity
With out each other we could not recognise either. We need complexity to know what is simple and we need simple to know what is complex
2. What analogy does Maeda use to demonstrate this relationship?
If a child only ate ice cream three meals a day then they would eventually stop liking ice cream. This is because they would no experience any of the other tastes that foods have to offer. The surprise of eating ice cream would be taken away from its constant taste.
3. In what context does Maeda discuss rhythm / beat in relation to the fifth law
Contextualise this relationship and discuss how this can be used in relation to the
Student Exhibition - giving specific examples
With out one there can not be the other. They are a balance. Like a seesaw for the seesaw to work there has to be to people, one to push off the ground and then the others weight to bring them down and so on as you repeat. Every action must have a reaction other wise the action would not exists.
4. HOMEWORK: Find visual examples - pieces of design & multimedia work that
demonstrate the relationship between simplicity and complexity – post the results
on your blog, with contextual analysis and reflection
The image bellow looks very simple but the process that it was made it very complex. First a photo was taken using a model, then the photo was edited in photoshop. The shadows were kept and the rest deleted. Then it was printed on to acetate and projected on to cardboard, the larger image was then traced and then cut out of the cardboard. The back ground was painted green and then text was hand written on it. The stencil was then laid on top and sprayed with spray paint. That is how the image was made.

Excellent work - you have done solid research and your creative & critical thinking is well explained. Top marks.
